 2016 Preview

Carbon Hill finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Carbon Hill finished seventh in Class 4A region five with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1999 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Carbon Hill averaged scoring just 12.5 points a game. The Bulldogs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 36.3 points a game.

The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Carbon Hill football program has struggled with a record of 7-53.

Over the past 25 seasons, Carbon Hill has not won much with a record of 73-181. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 3A and 349th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2006.

After only two seasons at the helm in Carbon Hill, Woody Smothers will not return to the sidelines next season. His two teams finished a combined 3-17 and only won a single region game in 2014.

Scott Curd returns to his old high school as the head football coach in 2016.

He has previously been a head football coach at McKenzie, Brilliant, Addison and Danville with a 12-48 record.

Coach Curd's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 12-48 (20.0%).

The Carbon Hill Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region four during the 2016 season. The Bulldogs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region four this year.

It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Carbon Hill will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

Quarterback Jon Avery returns for his junior season after completing 53 of 91 passes for 633 yards and 2 touchdowns last season.

The Bulldogs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Locust Fork on Friday, August 19 at G.W. Keith Stadium. Last year the Locust Fork Hornets finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 4A region seven. The Hornets ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hokes Bluff by a score of 21-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Carbon Hill and Locust Fork have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-1-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in with
